What's With This Climate Change?

Wassuuuppp!
Simply Science
It's a gas!
Hot Stuff!
While the idea of a warmer Peterborough might seem like a good one, it is NOT all sunshine and popsicles!

Along with the warmer average temperatures will come more and more unpredictable and severe weather.

We could see more floods, droughts, storms, and extreme temperatures (you’ll need your long-johns because this can also mean REALLY cold winter days!)

HOW CLIMATE CHANGE WILL AFFECT:

You, me, our friends and family:

Fossil fuel emissions contribute to smog.   Peeeuwww!  This will cause more  people to have asthma and other illnesses.

The hotter the temperature the harder it is on our senior folks, the ill and the very young.

Ways of life could be affected.  The Inuit in the North have to make huge adjustments to the way they live because of the way climate change is affecting their land.
We will have to fork over the moolah ($$$) to pay for expenses created by climate change.  For example: paying for more pricey veggies because of crop damage from drought.
Yo-Yo (unpredictable!) weather is uncomfortable and confusing for us!  What should I wear?  When should I plant my garden?  We’ll have to deal with this more often.

Wildlife:

Most animals (except maybe cockroaches!) need predictable weather and seasons to be happy.  If our climate changes quickly it could put a LOT of stress on them – some will be miserable, some will disappear altogether. (Our polar bears are looking mighty shabby these days!)
We humans can pick up and move if we aren’t comfortable where we are; trees can’t!  They could become quite unhealthy and droopy and prone to bugs if the climate changes too quickly.
Some sea creatures (salmon, coral reefs) are very, very sensitive to changing sea temperatures.  They DO NOT like climate change.

This great land and our beautiful skies:

The pollution that causes climate change will produce more smog, acid rain and general air pollution.  Like ONE isn’t enough!!
The gorgeous landscape of Northern Canada is most sensitive to climate change.  The permafrost and glaciers are melting and the plants and wildlife there are feeling the heat.
Rising sea levels from melting ice caps could have folks in Prince Edward Island stocking up on rubber boots and rebuilding washed-out roads!
Lowering lake levels could have us, farmers, wildlife and tourism operators thirsty for more of the wet stuff!

If every person who used electricity, replaced one light bulb with an energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulb, 50 of the world's largest nuclear power plants could be shut down!
